CYBERSECURITY — My Tech Wizards

For most small businesses, cybersecurity feels like something only big companies need to worry about. The truth is the opposite: attackers target small businesses precisely because they assume the doors are unlocked. The good news is that the habits that stop the vast majority of attacks are simple, affordable, and well within reach for any team.

Here are five everyday habits that make a real difference.

1. Turn on multi-factor authentication everywhere

A password alone is no longer enough. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) adds a second check — usually a code or a tap on your phone — so a stolen password isn’t enough to get in. Enable it on email, banking, Microsoft 365, and any system that holds customer data. It is the single highest-impact security step you can take, and most services offer it for free.

2. Keep everything updated

Those update reminders you keep dismissing are usually patching security holes that attackers already know about. Set your computers, phones, and business software to update automatically. When a device or application stops receiving updates, it’s time to replace it — an unsupported system is an open door.

3. Learn to spot a phishing email

The majority of breaches start with someone clicking a link they shouldn’t have. Be suspicious of urgent requests, unexpected attachments, and messages that ask you to “verify” login details. When in doubt, confirm through a known phone number or by typing the website address yourself — never through the link in the message.

4. Back up your data — and test it

Ransomware and hardware failure are far less frightening when you have a clean, recent backup. Follow the 3-2-1 rule: three copies of your data, on two different types of media, with one stored offsite or in the cloud. Just as important, test your backups regularly so you know they’ll actually restore when you need them.

5. Limit who has access to what

Not everyone on your team needs administrator access. Give each person only the access their role requires, remove accounts the moment someone leaves, and review permissions a few times a year. It’s a quiet habit that dramatically shrinks the damage a single compromised account can do.

Small habits, big protection

None of these steps require a big budget or a full-time IT department — just consistency. Put them in place and you’ll be ahead of most businesses your size, and a much harder target than the attackers are hoping for.

Keeping these habits going every week is the part most owners run out of time for. That is the day-to-day of our cybersecurity and compliance services — the same practices, set up properly and watched for you.
